Azuma House (or Row House in Sumiyoshi) Mini Brick
The Azuma House is also known as "Row House in Sumiyoshi" ( Jap. 住吉の長屋 , Sumiyoshi no Nagaya ) in the district Sumiyoshi of Osaka. It is one of the first and most famous buildings of the Japanese architect Tadao Ando .
The building was completed in 1976 and has the typical features of Andō's architecture, such as the main use of exposed concrete as a building material. The two-storey house, laid out on a rectangular floor plan, houses four rooms that are connected to one another via an inner courtyard. A staircase leads from the inner courtyard to a footbridge that connects the two upper rooms. The inner courtyard, which is open to the top, must be crossed every time you change rooms. The windowless front facing the street is also striking. The only windows face the courtyard. This automatically becomes the center of the house.
